Why They Had to Call for Help After a Late-Night Visit from Their Guest

“It’s the only thing I have left from my grandma Frances,” the boy said quietly. According to him, his grandmother used to pray before that image every night and then tuck it under her pillow. When he was little and upset over his mother’s death, she would do the same for him because she believed it helped him settle down. Hearing Eleanor crying earlier, he had decided to share the one thing that had always comforted him.

He had assumed she was asleep and had tried to be as quiet as possible so he wouldn’t wake her. Eleanor stood there stunned by the generosity of it. In all the world, that small card was the most valuable thing he owned—the one object tying him to the person who had loved him.

More than that, if anyone needed comfort and protection, it was him. And yet he had given up his one treasure for the sake of a woman he had only just met. The gesture was so selfless it took her breath away. Unable to hold back her emotions, she got out of bed and pulled him into a tight embrace.

Tears ran down her face, but these were different—cleaner somehow, mixed with something like the first stirrings of maternal love. This child, a stranger only hours before, had stepped into the hollow place in her life so suddenly that he already felt like family. In that moment she made a private promise to do everything she could to help him build a safe, decent future. For the first time in months, when she finally fell asleep, her dreams were bright and peaceful.

In her sleep, she saw her husband and son again. They were calm, smiling, and at peace together. But this time their expressions seemed to carry something more than greeting. It felt like approval. Her husband gave a steady nod, and her son lifted his hand once more in farewell.

When she woke, her pillow was damp with tears, but there was the faintest smile on her face. For the first time in many weeks, a new life seemed possible. Her heart felt lighter, steadier, almost at peace.

By habit, she reached under the pillow and took out the small prayer card. After looking at it with quiet gratitude, she slipped it back into place and padded into the kitchen. A glance in the refrigerator told her she was short on ingredients for a proper breakfast. Accepting that, she set about making a hearty bowl of hot cereal…
