What remains of the story is a short digital video from the research drone. In the footage, there is nothing but Arctic stillness, and through the ancient ice you can just make out the dark shape of a warplane—wings, tail, and an open hatch.
Sometimes the most consequential decisions in history are made not by the people whose names fill textbooks, but by those deliberately erased from the record—people who chose to disappear because they believed it was the only decent thing left to do.
