The Cost of a Home: One Move That Never Happened

Linda rushed home to share the news. She expected relief, celebration even. But Eleanor was not elated. She listened quietly and then refused to pursue the legal option.

For Eleanor, going to court against her own blood felt unbearable. She could not imagine herself on a witness stand accusing the young woman she had raised. Even after the violence, she preferred resignation to confrontation.

She rejected the idea of litigation. “I can’t do that to her,” she told Linda. “It’s my family.” Her decision was rooted in a kind of forgiveness—and in a desire not to turn her remaining years into a public battle.

Linda tried to argue, to point out Eleanor’s rights and the physical abuse, but the older woman was resolute. She asked Linda not to pursue the case and to stop talking about the lawyer. All she wanted was peace.

The next morning Eleanor asked Linda to help pack. With a heavy heart, she moved into a state-run care facility rather than fight. Linda did it all: packed boxes, arranged the ride, and held her hand at the door.

Natalie went ahead with the wedding, spending what little she had on a big ceremony and the trappings of success. For a while, life went according to her plan—celebrations, new furniture, neighborhood bragging rights. The apartment was hers in every practical sense.

It didn’t last. At a party a few months later—too many people, too much alcohol—a careless cigarette or a candle started a fire. In the panic and the drinking, nobody noticed until it was too late.

The apartment that had been the prize burned almost to the studs. Clothes, furniture, everything meaningful and worthless turned to ash or was ruined by water and smoke. Natalie watched as the life she thought she’d secured went up in flames.

Mike’s attitude changed as soon as the bills arrived. He had been attracted to the convenience of the place and the appearance of success; he was less eager to share the work of rebuilding. Without the apartment to show, his interest cooled quickly.
