That evening, the detective handling the case informed Marina that Nina had later gone to the police station and caused another disturbance there. She was briefly detained after getting aggressive with staff. For the first time in a long while, she was forced to spend time somewhere without makeup, shopping bags, or an audience.
Not long after, investigators uncovered something else: Nina, the supposedly broke retiree, had a nearly new car sitting in a garage and assets that did not match the story she had been telling for years. That discovery helped dismantle what little credibility she had left.
The next two weeks were quiet. Marina worked, exercised, and enjoyed the peace. But once Nina was back home, she started waiting near Marina’s building. One call to the police put a stop to that, at least temporarily, when officers warned her that continued harassment could bring additional charges.
Desperate, Daniel tried filing a complaint of his own, accusing Marina of slander and intimidation. Natalie, the attorney, called it what it was: a weak attempt to muddy the waters. With the documentation Marina had, it went nowhere.
The detective added the bank records, witness statements, and dealership footage to the file. On the video, Nina could be seen openly trying to use a card that wasn’t hers and arguing that she had every right to it because “we’re family.” That was enough to make intent very hard to deny.
Daniel made a few halfhearted attempts to contact Marina after that, but she ignored him. After a couple of warnings from police, he backed off. He lost weight, looked exhausted, and carried himself like a man who had finally realized consequences were real.
Marina felt no pity. The hearing was scheduled for mid-fall, and by then the case was solid. She reviewed her statement with Natalie, prepared for every likely question, and walked into court with her head high.
The courtroom was full. Marina sat calm and composed beside her attorney, while across the aisle Nina tried on the role of wounded victim. She wore a plain dark dress, no makeup, and dabbed at dry eyes with a tissue.
Daniel sat beside her in a rumpled suit, looking ten years older than he had just months earlier. When the proceedings began, Nina’s lawyer offered a predictable argument: this had all been a misunderstanding within a family, and Nina had believed she was using shared household funds.
Marina listened without interrupting. When it was her turn, she stuck to facts.
She submitted the annual statements showing nearly $4,900 in unauthorized spending on luxury items and travel. She pointed out the purchases from plus-size clothing stores and quietly noted her own size. Nina shifted in her seat.
Then came evidence of three resort trips and social media photos showing Nina enjoying herself while claiming financial hardship. The judge studied the images with interest. They did not support the picture of a struggling, confused older woman….
