The sentence was harsh. Head doctor Krylov received 15 years in a maximum-security prison. The security guard Semyon got 10 years. The other accomplices received sentences ranging from 8 to 12 years. There was silence in the courtroom as the judge read the verdict.
After the trial, Marina and Vera Ivanovna were awarded compensation. Marina received 2.3 million for the threat to her life, moral damages, and loss of employment. Vera Ivanovna received less – 500,000, but for the old woman, this was also a huge amount of money.
When Marina came home and told her father about the compensation, Pyotr Semyonovich couldn’t believe it.
— Two million… Sweetie, are you kidding me?
— I’m not kidding, Dad. The money has been transferred to our account. I checked.
Her father started to cry. He had worried for so long that he was a burden to his daughter, that because of him, she couldn’t live a normal life. And now, suddenly, there was money that could change their lives.
— What are you going to do? – he asked when he had calmed down.
Marina thought for a moment. She had been thinking about this a lot over the past few weeks. Work as a nurse in another clinic? But the salary would still be small, and life would continue in the same old pattern.
— I want to start my own business, — she said. — A small medical office. Where people can get simple medical services: IV drips, blood pressure checks, consultations. Without deception, without exorbitant prices. Honestly and conscientiously.
Her father smiled:
— That’s a great idea, sweetie. You can do it.
Marina started taking action. She found a small space on the ground floor of a residential building in their neighborhood. It used to be a shop, but it had closed down, and the owner was renting out the space. The room was spacious, well-renovated, with a separate entrance. Marina rented it and started setting it up. She bought medical equipment, a couch, cabinets for medicine, a refrigerator. She ordered a sign that said “Medical Office.” She completed all the necessary paperwork and obtained a license. It took two months, but she managed.
One evening, when the renovation was almost complete, there was a knock on the door. Marina opened it and saw Vera Ivanovna. The old woman was standing with a bouquet of flowers, smiling shyly.
— Marinochka, I heard you’re opening your own office. Congratulations!
— Thank you, Vera Ivanovna. Come in, I’ll show you around.
They went inside. Vera Ivanovna looked around the room, nodding with approval:
— It turned out beautiful. Cozy. People will come to you.
Marina poured tea, and they sat at a small table in the corner of the office.
— Vera Ivanovna, I wanted to ask you something, — Marina began. — You’re out of a job now. The clinic is closed, and you received compensation. What are you planning to do?
The old woman shrugged:
— I don’t know, dear. It’s too early for retirement, I’m only 65. And it’s hard to find a cleaning job at my age. I guess I’ll stay at home, babysit my grandchildren.
— What if I offered you a job? — Marina looked her in the eyes. — I need an administrator. Someone to schedule patients, answer calls, and keep the office in order. The salary is not huge, of course, 30,000, but it’s stable. And without hard physical labor.
Vera Ivanovna froze with a cup in her hands:
