The Day My Harmless Joke Landed on the Worst Possible Stranger

This time the title was short and clear: “Anna Parker Art Studio — Enrollment Open.” By morning, twenty people had already signed up. Fall arrived—the season of fairs—and the next one came just a week later.

Mike suggested they go, but stay far away from any contests. “We’re attending as private citizens,” he said with a laugh, adjusting his scarf. “No online voting. Just cotton candy and fresh air.” The moment they stepped into the town square, a murmur passed through the crowd.

The emcee spotted them from a distance and lit up immediately. He recognized both of them at once. Beaming into the microphone, he called out, “Well, if it isn’t the most famous couple from our last festival!” Then, laughing, he added, “I hope you’re ready for one more little improvisation.”

The crowd laughed along, and Anna felt a flicker of nerves. “A short one!” the emcee said, winking as he looked their way expectantly. Anna smiled, embarrassed, while Mike stood beside her calm and steady, though his eyes flashed with that familiar playful spark.

The crowd chuckled, expecting another comic scene, and the emcee was barely containing his grin. “We’ll keep it simple,” Mike called back. Then he turned to Anna, gently shielding her with his body from the phones and curious stares, and took her hands in his.

“This time I’m doing it on purpose,” he said, and for her his voice cut through the noise of the square without any microphone at all. He kissed her slowly and seriously, without the clumsy accident of the stage. This time the world didn’t tilt out of control. It finally grew still, no longer winking through phone cameras or demanding explanations….
