Someone Else’s Rules: Why You Should Never Judge a Man’s Connections by His Modest Clothes

At that, Tyler started shaking. Tears ran down his bruised face. He swore he had no idea who the old man really was. North stood and walked over to him.

He said Tyler did not understand much about life. He did not understand that eventually a man pays for what he does. He thought his father’s badge and his family’s money could fix anything.

North bent close enough for Tyler to smell tobacco on his coat. He said that tonight Tyler was going to learn what his mistakes were worth.

Early the next morning, Tyler Larson was found tied to a utility pole outside the gates of his own upscale neighborhood. Written across his chest in black marker were the words: I beat a war veteran.

His face was a wreck—broken nose, four teeth gone, both eyes swollen shut. Both arms had been dislocated at the elbows.

North had personally stepped in for the veteran, he said, and the commissioner’s sons would be next.

There was a long silence on the line. Finally Grayson asked whether it was really that North. Tyler’s father said yes. His son had named him.

Grayson tried to sound calm. He said he would handle it through his connections. But he still did not understand that no county official, no bought detective, and no favor owed was going to stop what had already started.

Ian and Dennis Grayson heard about Tyler the next morning. Their father called, and his voice was tighter than either of them had ever heard it. He ordered them to stay inside, lock the doors, and wait for armed security.

Ian demanded an explanation, and Grayson told them about Tyler being found tied to a pole with the words on his chest. Dennis, listening on speaker, went white.

He remembered in sharp detail kicking the old man in the ribs and feeling the bones give under his boot. At the time it had felt like power. Now it felt like a countdown had started…
