He Saved a Child from the Rising Waters. The Next Morning, the Law Came Knocking.

“I picked this out for Scout,” Lily said, petting the dog who was happily wagging his tail.

“I think we’re going to get along just fine,” Frank said, looking around his new life.

He took his new job seriously, and William was thrilled with his work. Frank often joined the family for dinner. On days when William was busy with work, Frank, Martha, and Lily would eat together. Lily finally had the grandparents she never had, and she flourished under their care. Scout became the neighborhood favorite, always ready to play with the local kids.

“Everything worked out,” Martha said one evening, sitting on a bench with Frank as they watched Lily play.

— “I never thought I’d have a life like this. No wife, no kids… and then I find all this at sixty-three,” Frank smiled, looking at Martha. “I’m a lucky man. And I’m lucky I met you, Martha.”

Frank reached out and took her hand.

“I haven’t felt like this since I was a kid,” he admitted, looking down. “You mean a lot to me, Martha. I wanted to say…”

“I know,” Martha said, leaning over to give him a soft kiss on the cheek. “I’ve known for a while. We don’t need big speeches at our age, Frank. We just need each other.”

Frank smiled and put his arm around her. He had finally found the home and the family he had spent a lifetime looking for.
