After that night Eleanor began avoiding Evan around the house. A friend soon found her a good rental, and she started packing. At the door, Evan surprised her and asked why she was leaving so suddenly. Eleanor said she’d gotten a call from her friend about the new place and insisted she didn’t want to be a burden.

Evan stepped closer and asked why she thought she was a burden, or how he might have offended her. Eleanor admitted, haltingly, that it wasn’t his fault—she was scared of how deeply she’d come to care for him.

Evan smiled warmly and said they could be cautious together. He hugged her and kissed her gently.
