She admitted she’d tried to keep everything together until the visit from Susan finally tipped her over. She’d packed and left. Hearing this, Evan said the confrontation had actually happened two days earlier; she’d been out long enough that she’d slept most of that first day. Eleanor immediately apologized and said she should go; she’d stay with a friend for a little while.
Evan stopped her. He offered his spare room and said Margaret and he would be glad to have her there until she figured things out. Margaret eagerly agreed. Eleanor promised to find a new place and move out as soon as she could.
Back at school Eleanor officially filed for divorce. For the first time in years she felt lighter.
Mike made several attempts to cause a scene at her workplace, but the security guard quickly cooled him off with a warning about calling the police.
The attempts stopped the day Evan came to pick Eleanor up. He took her hand and calmly led her out the door. Mike shouted and demanded an explanation. Evan made it clear that they were no longer married and suggested it would be better if Mike stayed away from the school. The likely confrontation was enough to make Mike slip away.
