So he focused on the most accessible spots, places where she could easily have tucked something away. He examined the couch again and decided to search the folds of the upholstery. Slowly, inch by inch, he peeled back the old fabric.

Before long, a tightly folded yellowed sheet of paper slipped out and fell to the floor. Mike decided not to open it alone. He wanted to share the moment with his wife. He tucked the note into the inside pocket of his jacket.

He got in the car and drove straight home. His wife met him at the door, half joking, and asked him not to tell her he had found pirate treasure or old greeting cards. Mike was in no mood to laugh. Whatever this was, it mattered.

He unfolded the note and asked her to read it silently first. In the letter, Eleanor addressed her dear grandson directly and explained that she had hidden the message from the watchful eyes of her daughter-in-law. She said she hoped Mike would be the one to take the couch they had once picked out together.

Eleanor had clearly seen the family pressure coming. The note revealed part of the truth and gave them a lot to think about. Mike took a breath, lowered the paper, and looked over at his wife.

While he was still processing it, she had already read every line. It was now clear that Eleanor had intended to secure her grandson’s financial future. What was still unclear was exactly how she had arranged to do it.

This new layer of mystery only left Mike more confused, and even his wife had no practical advice to offer. There was only one sensible next step: take the note straight to Ethan. He would understand the legal angle and know what to do.

They had to move quickly, because the formal reading of the will was only days away. When Mike stopped by his parents’ house again, they were practically glowing with anticipation, still expecting him to sign. His mother had even baked his favorite pie and urged him to get the paperwork over with…
