The Blind Spot: The Secret Grandma Trusted to an Old Couch Instead of to People

“Mom, I didn’t come here to listen to more of this,” Mike said firmly. Then he stood up, told her to call a doctor if she really felt unwell, and left. For the next several days, the family kept a stiff silence and made no effort to reconnect.

Mike still needed to check the couch, but everyday responsibilities kept getting in the way. His wife had him tied up with chores around the house, and there was hardly a quiet minute to think. In the little downtime he had, he kept replaying his aunt’s warnings and Ethan’s advice.

What he could not figure out was why his aunt disliked his parents so strongly when she herself had no claim to the estate. One evening over dinner, his wife made an observation that turned out to be closer to the truth than either of them knew.

She said the whole inheritance mess might resolve itself without him having to fight for anything. So much pointless conflict had already grown out of a few pieces of property. Things could have gone very differently if everyone had just sat down and talked like adults.

His aunt had said Eleanor signed the will under pressure from his father. Apparently she had done what they wanted, but had also built in a few very specific conditions. To avoid dealing with those conditions, his parents had tried the shortcut of getting him to sign away his rights.

What Mike still did not know was just how carefully his grandmother had planned for him. She had not simply included him in the estate. She had set things up to provide for him for years to come. He would learn that soon enough, once he found what was hidden in the old couch.

That was where the answers were waiting, answers that would force him to rethink his relationship with his parents completely. By the time he finally made it out to the cabin, it was already evening, so he decided to wait until morning to take the couch apart.

He stepped out onto the quiet porch, sat down on the steps, and let his thoughts settle. He wondered whether his parents would change course if he really did find some clue Eleanor had left behind.

It was hard not to feel sad thinking about how quickly a death in the family had turned into a fight over property. Eleanor had not been wealthy by celebrity standards, but she had owned a good apartment, a garage, a house, and respectable savings. That was more than enough to set off a battle between Mike and his parents.

In the morning, he got to work, but taking apart the old couch was not easy. To get inside, he had to carefully remove the heavy top section. It was obvious right away that Eleanor, at her age, would not have hidden a note somewhere too difficult to reach…
