The room went silent except for the ticking of a wall clock. Susan stared at her and said Emily had to be lying, because Mike had told her something entirely different. Emily cut in and said that was exactly the problem: her son had been lying to his own mother without blinking.
She explained that the food spread across the table had been taken straight from her refrigerator while she was at work. While Emily was putting in long shifts, Mike had cleaned out their kitchen and left her with nothing but half a dried-up orange. Aunt Nina froze with a bite of pie halfway to her mouth.
Susan put a hand to her chest and said she would not tolerate such disgrace in her family. Mike, now red as a beet, snapped that Emily was blowing things out of proportion and that they were only in a temporary financial dip.
He tried to salvage things by saying he had only borrowed a little food for his sick mother and fully intended to replace it. Emily calmly asked for a date—when, exactly, did he plan to pay it back? No clear answer came. She said plainly that he had stolen from her and used her money to buy himself the image of a generous son.
Then she stood up, thanked them dryly for the hospitality, and reached for her purse. As she headed toward the front hall, Mike rushed after her, trying to stop her with weak appeals to marriage and decency. He said normal people didn’t handle problems like this.
Emily picked up her bag and said, just as calmly, that they had stopped being a normal household a long time ago. She told him he was free to remain his mother’s overgrown boy, live under her roof, and enjoy her baking. Then she informed Susan that the position of financial sponsor for her fully grown son was now officially vacant.
When she reached the front door, Mike came after her and grabbed at her coat sleeve. Through clenched teeth, he said this was all a bluff because a divorced woman over thirty wasn’t exactly in high demand. Emily looked at him with the kind of relief people feel after finally getting rid of a tooth that had been hurting for months.
She held out her hand and told him to give back every key. He tried to play dumb, so she made herself very clear. If those keys were not in her hand immediately, she said, she would call the police and report the car stolen and the house entered without permission.
Mike hesitated, then yanked the key ring from his pocket and threw it onto the mat. He shouted after her that he would make something of himself yet and she’d regret this. Emily picked up the keys, brushed them off, and walked out without another word.
She closed the front door behind her with deep satisfaction. One peaceful week passed, and Emily discovered just how healing quiet could be. Her refrigerator stayed full, and the contents no longer vanished overnight….
