Weeks later, Max began returning to the hospital, completely on his own. He would enter through the main doors, walk down the corridor to the children’s ward, and quietly stop at each crib.
He would rest his head for a moment beside each baby, as if checking on them, and then move on to the next.
The hospital staff said, “It’s as if he’s looking for Ilya.”
But Ilya’s mother believed it was something deeper. She said, “He’s not looking. He’s helping. He carries a piece of Ilya with him now.”
