Her coworkers didn’t miss a chance to tease her about it, hinting that the charming out-of-towner had a serious crush. They gossiped that since her husband seemed in no rush to start a family, maybe she was looking elsewhere. Mary was furious at the baseless rumors and firmly told them to drop it. She even asked her boss to move her to the back kitchen to avoid the dining room entirely, but they were too short-staffed to accommodate her.
She had to endure the whispering, carefully hiding the situation from Mark, who had always been the jealous type. Things came to a head when Jesse waited by her car after her shift to ask her out directly. He told her he’d never met anyone quite like her, but a panicked Mary firmly told him she was happily married and to leave her alone.
Unfortunately, a couple of the diner waitresses walked out right at that moment, taking the scene completely out of context. The rumor mill went into overdrive. Insulted by the rejection and the town’s hostility, Jesse and his crew finished their contracts and moved on to the next state. But for Mary, the nightmare was just beginning. The exaggerated gossip inevitably reached Mark. He started picking fights constantly, though Mary managed to convince him of her innocence for a while.
Not long after, Mary was thrilled to discover she was finally pregnant. Mark, however, took the news coldly, claiming they weren’t financially ready, and retreated to the garage to tinker with his truck. Left alone, the expectant mother cried on the back porch, finding comfort only in phone calls with her mother, Cathy. Her mom assured her that once Mark held his baby, his doubts would vanish.
Those hopes were dashed when the baby was born. Both parents were fair-haired, but little Aaron had thick dark hair and a darker complexion. Mark became convinced of her infidelity, refusing to even hold his son, and the house became a battleground of cold shoulders and bitter arguments. Exhausted, Mary offered to take a DNA test to clear her name once and for all. But Mark saw it as an insult, claiming the fact that she even had to prove it was humiliating enough. A week later, he filed for divorce.
Her mother urged Mary to scrape the money together and get the test anyway, just to shut the town up. But Mary, her pride wounded and her heart broken, refused to play along. She believed the truth would eventually speak for itself. She decided to focus entirely on raising Aaron, keeping her head down and giving the local gossips nothing more to talk about.
Life was settling into a quiet routine until one afternoon, a woman from Jesse’s crew—who had passed back through town—showed up at Mary’s door. Having heard the rumors, the woman aggressively demanded to see “Jesse’s boy,” causing a massive scene on the front lawn. Terrified, Mary locked the door and called the police, shouting through the window that her son had nothing to do with them.
Half the neighborhood came out to watch the commotion. It took a sheriff’s deputy to escort the woman off the property, but the damage was done. The incident sparked a fresh wave of vicious rumors, making Mary feel entirely unsafe in her own home. Unable to handle the constant whispering and the hostile stares at the grocery store, Mary made the difficult decision to pack up and leave her hometown for good…
