The Price of a Summer Romance: A Story of Grace and Unspoken Truths

“You’re a very distinguished man, Mike,” Linda said kindly. “I’m sure there are many women who would be happy to share their lives with you. You’re clearly a devoted father.”

“And what about you?” he asked, leaning in. “Could a man like me—someone who’s seen a bit of life—interest a woman like you?” Linda was stunned. She felt the heat rise to her cheeks and looked down at her plate, unsure of how to respond to such a direct question from a man like Mike.

She wasn’t prepared for this. She had spent her life assuming this kind of attention was for other women. Mike, sensing her hesitation, reached across the table and touched her hand briefly.

“I’m not playing games, Linda. At my age, I don’t have time for them. I think you’re a remarkable woman. You’re smart, you’re kind, and you have a peace about you that I find incredibly attractive,” he said sincerely.

He made it clear that he was looking for a partner, not a fling. “Think about it. No pressure. I just wanted you to know where I stand,” he told her as he dropped her off at her condo. Linda walked inside, her head spinning.

She called her mother the next morning and told her everything. “Linda, don’t you dare overthink this!” her mother exclaimed. “He’s a good man, he’s stable, and he clearly appreciates you. Say yes!” Linda hesitated, mentioning that she didn’t feel that “spark” of romantic love.

“Honey, that Hollywood romance stuff fades,” her mother said pragmatically. “Your father and I have had our share of rough patches, believe me. There were times we almost called it quits. But we stayed because we built a life together. Having a partner makes the world a lot less lonely.”

Linda thought about her future. Did she want to spend the next thirty years in an empty condo? Mike was kind, respectful, and they shared similar values. He offered a life of security and companionship.

A few months later, they were married in a small, elegant ceremony. Linda looked lovely in a simple cream-colored suit, her hair professionally styled to give it volume. Mike beamed with pride, introducing her to his friends as his “brilliant wife.”

He turned out to be a wonderful husband. He was attentive and gentle, always making sure she felt appreciated. He called her “Linny,” and their home was filled with a quiet, comfortable affection. They didn’t have the fire of a young couple, but they had something steady and reliable.
