— “That’s fine. I’ve learned to be patient.”
Upstairs, Victor was in his climate-controlled office, leaning back in his leather chair. He was on the phone with a corporate partner, his voice dripping with self-importance.
As soon as he hung up, Paula called again.
— “Victor, that man is still here. He’s becoming an eyesore. Could you just give him a minute so he’ll leave?”
Victor laughed:
— “Let him wait. He’ll get hungry or tired eventually. I don’t waste my time on people who don’t bring value to this company. I’m running a business here.”
A young bellhop named Sam had been watching the scene from the side. He saw Michael sitting alone in the corner. While everyone else was mocking the man, Sam felt only a sense of respect for his age and his quiet dignity.

Michael looked up and smiled warmly:

Sam’s expression turned serious:
— “Don’t worry. I’ll go up there myself and tell him you’re still waiting. It’s not right to leave you sitting here like this.”
Michael nodded gratefully:
— “I appreciate the kindness, son. It goes a long way.”
Sam headed for the stairs and knocked on the manager’s door. Victor looked up, annoyed.
— “What is it now, Sam?”
Sam stood his ground:
— “Victor, that gentleman has been in the lobby for two hours. He says it’s important. We should at least hear him out.”
Victor’s face contorted with irritation. He spoke in a cold, sharp tone:
— “Sam, how many times do I have to tell you? Stay away from the loiterers. He’s not a client. He’s probably confused or looking for a place to nap.”
Sam tried one last time:
— “But sir… he seems like a decent man. He said it’s a serious matter.”
Victor leaned back and scoffed:
— “Serious matter? In those clothes? Do you have any idea the size of the contracts I sign in this office? You want me to stop my work to chat with a guy who looks like he shops at a thrift store?”
Sam went silent, realizing he couldn’t reach Victor’s conscience. He felt a deep sense of disappointment. He thought to himself:
