Thanks to years of hard work, Larissa got into a respected law school on her first try at 18. Her scores were among the highest in the applicant pool. Eleanor cried openly the day the acceptance became official, right there in the middle of a busy hallway on campus.

She didn’t care who saw. Larissa blushed with embarrassment at first, then hugged her grandmother and smiled. It was their victory, and they both knew it.

Daniel was 14 by then and deep into the awkward years of adolescence. He had become interested in photography and took pictures of everything on an old phone Eleanor had given him for his birthday. On the subway ride home after Larissa’s acceptance, the young woman looked over at her tired grandmother and finally asked the question she had carried for years.

“Grandma, be honest—do you ever regret giving up your old life for us?” she asked quietly.

Eleanor was silent for a moment, watching the tunnel lights flicker past the window. Then she turned to her granddaughter with that direct look Larissa had known since childhood.

“Sweetheart, there’s only one thing I regret,” she said. “I regret not doing it sooner.”

There was no drama in her voice, no self-sacrifice on display. Just certainty.

Larissa didn’t fully understand those words then, rattling home on public transit with her acceptance letter in her bag. She understood them years later, when she became a successful attorney herself and had to make difficult decisions of her own.

She learned that the right choice in life often doesn’t feel like torment. When you act according to your values, the noise falls away. What remains is clarity.

All five years of law school were still paid for by Eleanor, who never once burdened her granddaughter with the full truth of the financial strain. Larissa, aware enough to see it anyway, worked half-days as a courier in a small law office to help with expenses….
