“She needs family,” Mike went on. “I’m gone too much for work. She spends too much time waiting on me to get back.” “I understand,” Tammy said quietly. “A child needs more than one tired parent trying to do everything.”

“Exactly,” Mike said. “So I want to make you a proposal.” He took a breath. “Move to the city. Come live near us—or with us, if we can make the space work. Help with Polly. We can fix this place up and sell it, or keep it as a little cabin for the summer. What do you think?”

Tammy looked stunned. “I… I don’t even know what to say.” Just then Polly came running into the kitchen, climbed into her grandmother’s lap, and wrapped both arms around her neck.

“Grandma, come live with us!” she said. Tammy broke down all over again, holding the little girl close. “All right,” she whispered. “Yes. I’d like that very much.”

And a week later, the three of them were driving back to the city apartment together—toward a new life that, for the first time in a long while, felt whole.
