A Chance Encounter on the Interstate: Who the Driver Really Found in the Snowbank

Mike scrambled toward the back of the warehouse, staying low. Bullets whizzed past his head. He reached the generator, ripped off the service panel, and went to work. He bypassed the safety valves and opened the fuel lines, letting the smell of diesel fill the air. He rigged the electrical load to redline.

He pulled out his lighter, his hand steady. He flicked it, tossed it toward the leaking fuel, and dove for cover. A massive explosion rocked the warehouse, a ball of fire erupting from the machine. The shockwave blew out the remaining windows and sent a wall of heat through the building.

Mike scrambled back to Sarah, grabbed her, and they bolted for the rear exit. Jack was right behind them, providing suppressive fire. Smoke filled the air, but they burst out into the cold night. The fresh air felt like a miracle.

They reached Jack’s vehicle—a blacked-out SUV. Mike threw Sarah into the back seat, and Jack jumped behind the wheel, flooring it as they sped away from the burning warehouse. The sirens were already wailing in the distance.

The silence in the car was eventually broken by Sarah’s quiet voice. “Is it over?” she whispered. Mike looked at her. For the first time, the fear was gone. She looked free. Jack’s phone buzzed. He checked it and gave a short nod. “Silas Sterling was just taken into custody at his estate.”

Sarah let out a long, shaky breath. Mike just leaned back and closed his eyes. Justice had finally caught up. Three weeks later, Sarah sat on a park bench in Pittsburgh, watching the world go by. She wasn’t running anymore. Mike sat beside her, holding a cup of coffee.

“So, what’s the plan, kid?” he asked with a smile. “I think I’m going to go back to school,” she said. “Maybe law. I want to be on the other side of the files for once.” Mike nodded. “Good for you.” After a moment, he added, “You sure you don’t want to learn how to drive a rig?” Sarah laughed—a clear, bright sound. “I think I’ve had enough road trips for one lifetime, Mike.”
