However, when he said “quiet,” his voice dripped with superiority, and “honest” sounded like a euphemism for “poor.” The highlight of Eleanor’s gifts was the keys to a fully furnished condo, though it was one of their older rental properties.

The room erupted in applause. Then Susan handed the couple a thick envelope, which the guests immediately guessed contained at least ten thousand dollars. The DJ cheerfully announced a toast from the father of the bride, though his voice held a hint of hesitation, as if the crowd was expecting an awkward moment.

Bill stood up, clutching a plain, white mailing envelope that looked completely flat. Eleanor exchanged a meaningful look with her sister, while Leonard leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, waiting for what he assumed would be a meager offering. Bill walked over to his daughter and handed her the envelope, asking her in a quiet but firm voice to read the contents privately.
