Sarah was thrilled for her friend, listening eagerly to the details of their upcoming date. The romance moved quickly, and within two years, Mark formally proposed. The wedding was a modest affair, with Sarah standing proudly as the maid of honor. The only dark cloud over the happy occasion was the flat refusal of Mark’s wealthy parents to accept a daughter-in-law from a blue-collar background.
His parents issued a harsh ultimatum, but Mark chose Mary, effectively cutting himself off from the family trust and his father’s connections. Left without his cushy job at his dad’s firm, Mark suggested they temporarily move to Mary’s rural hometown to save up for their own place. He had a business degree and a reliable car, so he was confident he’d find a decent job soon, even if country living wasn’t exactly his style.
Mary reassured her stressed husband, promising that they could build a good life in her hometown. She happily noted that the local diner had already offered her a manager position, and her mother would welcome him with open arms. Mark admitted with a sigh that his family was just used to controlling everything and had even tried to set him up with a country club heiress, which he had flatly refused.
Mary nodded sadly; she knew all about it. Her future mother-in-law had actually shown up at her apartment, demanding she call off the wedding. The wealthy woman had told her to her face that a small-town girl would only drag her son down. Mark told Mary to ignore their snobbery, genuinely believing his parents would eventually come around.
However, Mark’s parents held their ground, coldly waiting for their son’s rebellious phase to end. Their cynical bet paid off a couple of years later, when the couple’s newborn son was barely two months old. Mark, who had been distant since the birth, suddenly accused his wife of cheating and flat-out refused to believe the boy was his.
In a fit of anger, Mark yelled that the whole town was gossiping about Mary and a charismatic traveling contractor named Jesse, who had been working in the area. The baby, with his dark hair and olive skin, looked nothing like Mark. Stunned and in tears, Mary swore she had been faithful, desperately trying to reason with her jealous husband. Mark just scoffed, grabbed his duffel bag, slammed the front door hard enough to rattle the windows, and drove off, leaving her behind.
The root of the rumors was a crew of out-of-state contractors who had set up an RV camp on the edge of town for a few months to handle roofing repairs after a bad storm. The tight-knit, boisterous crew kept to themselves mostly, though the locals were a bit wary of the newcomers. Still, the men were hard workers, and the town council was glad to have the extra hands to fix up the local buildings.
Jesse, one of the foremen, stood out with his natural charm and easy smile. He turned the heads of quite a few single women in town, but for some reason, he took a liking to Mary. The handsome contractor made a point to stop by the diner during her shifts, leaving generous tips and trying to draw her into playful banter. Mary just kept things professional, doing her best to shut down the unwanted attention…
